Daniel Jones, co-founder of Kindling Arts, takes us through his changing definitions of pride in his life and creative pursuits.

Is pride a dirty word? Growing up religious in the south, Daniel Jones was raised with a very specific (and negative) definition of pride. Through his own work and highlighting the works of other artists, he’s come to a new way to think about pride: the power of creatives taking pride in and showing our work. If we have that creative impetus, we should think about sharing it with the world—this idea is a driving force behind the accessible, freewheeling, inclusive arts festival Kindling Arts, co-founded by Daniel, which consistently redefines performance art in Nashville.

About the speaker

Daniel Jones (he/him) is a Nashville-based producer, dramaturg, writer, and director passionate about facilitating creative storytelling, diverse narratives, and shared live arts experiences that ignite social change. In 2022, the Nashville Scene named him “Best Advocate for Artists.” As the Co-Founder & Producing Artistic Director of the nonprofit organization Kindling Arts, Daniel has worked with hundreds of Nashville-based artists to launch 50+ unique artistic experiences in the past six years. Those projects have generated more than $100,000 in income for performing and visual artists working outside existing institutions. Among programming highlights, in 2022, Daniel co-conceived and co-directed the world premiere of The Naughty Tree, a queering of the Garden of Eden myth developed in collaboration with Woven Theater Company, playwright River Timms, and theatrical rock band Fable Cry. The unique interdisciplinary production was named “Best Local Theater Production” by the Nashville Scene in 2022. Later that year, Kindling Arts Festival celebrated five years of programming with a record turn-out, more than doubling attendance and ticket sales from any previous year -- and the recently wrapped 2023 Festival surpassed records as well. Daniel is also the Manager of Artistic Programming at OZ Arts Nashville, where he has supported hundreds of artists and performers from around the world as the on-the-ground coordinator for the Visiting Artist Series, which has included artists from New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Brazil, Japan, Chile, Germany, and more. He also works closely with Nashville artists as they develop new works and realize their visions in the organization’s unique 10,000 square-foot warehouse. Daniel serves on the boards of Tennessee Presenters and Nashville Arts Coalition. He was chosen as one of three arts administrators in the Southeast for a fellowship with the International Society for the Performing Arts (2023-2025).
