ABOUT YOUR HOST

I’m an illustrator and educator in Austin who began my career as an elementary Art teacher. I learned a tremendous amount in my early career from little children on creating things. When I moved into freelance in 2016, I began to lead corporate art making workshops, and was struck by the differences in how children and adults make art. One is full of freedom and joy, and one is full of contraction and nervousness. I’ll let you guess which is which ;-)

At the same time I was teaching at the Contemporary Art School in Austin, and noticed the course offerings were entirely product focused. Interestingly, little children (and all of us when we were little children) didn’t make art to make things. Small children make art to come home to themselves, have fun and relax! They have fun because the art for them isn’t the THING. Rather, THEY are the art! I have learned from many adult students over the years, that a practice in making to relax is incredibly important to thriving as creative people. Since 2020 I have been developing courses that re-introduce adults to the ways they made art as children.

This meet-up is a chance for anyone with a passion to make things, to gather in the fresh air, rejuvenate their nervous systems with art supplies and converse like minded creatives. Folks can re-enter their days more calm, grounded and nourished.
