About the speaker
Carl Chapple is a painter.
For the past ten years he has mainly been working with dancers, finding inspiration in rehearsal and performance spaces, as well as through direct collaboration in the painting studio. This latter work, often involving improvisation to discover poses which may be very gestural, precarious or otherwise unlikely, results in pictures which combine elements of traditional portraiture with more experimental, narrative figure painting.
Carl’s talk will skip through his life from Dartmoor to South Wales, and consider the influences and experiences that inform his current practice, including – before settling in Barry in 2004 – time spent in Greece, Italy, the Czech Republic, and London. It will look at periods studying Classical and Renaissance sculpture, drawing and painting, to working from the nude and then in portraiture – particularly involving stand-up comedians and other stage performers – before discovering dance and dancers, and exploring creative partnerships across these artistic disciplines.
