About the speaker

Charles Michael Brotman earned his M.A. in music from the University of Hawai‘i and began his career as a composer and producer in the advertising world. At the same time, he ventured into the artist arena, releasing his first two solo albums to critical acclaim and garnering heavy radio airplay across the United States.

Eventually relocating to Kamuela on Hawai‘i Island, Charles built Lava Tracks Recording Studio and co-founded Palm Records with his business partner and sister, Jody Brotman. Palm Records specialized in acoustic island music and released over a dozen albums for Charles’s acoustic guitar trio, Kohala, which has toured extensively throughout Japan.

Under his producer moniker Barrel Thieves, Charles has created a diverse catalog spanning rock, pop, and singer-songwriter genres. His work has earned a Grammy Award, multiple Grammy nominations, #1 placements on the Billboard charts, and numerous local music awards.

Charles’s music has been featured in hundreds of TV and cable programs in the U.S. and abroad, including Chicago Med, NCIS, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Path, The Descendants, Black-ish, Portlandia, Hawaii Five-0, Rescue: HI Surf, Magnum P.I., Lost, Oprah, CBS Sports, America’s Most Wanted, Entertainment Tonight, and many others.

In addition to his ongoing production work, Charles serves as director of Hawai‘i’s Creative Lab Music Immersive and is a current board member and former president of the Hawai‘i Songwriting Festival.
