About the speaker

Carl Malamud has been working on the Internet for close to 40 years and has long been a champion for open access. In 1993, he started the first radio station on the Internet, where he pioneered early podcasting and live streaming efforts. He went on to post numerous U.S. government databases on the Internet for public access, then convinced the government to take those efforts over. For the last 15 years, he has been waging a satyagraha to make public safety standards (such as building) codes available to the public for free access. This satyagraha has bore fruit with significant victories in the U.S., Europe, and India. For a decade, he has worked with colleagues and volunteers to build a Public Library of India under the auspices of the Servants of Knowledge Association. The effort includes a scan centre located in Gandhi Bhavan which has a capacity of digitising 15 lakh pages per month. The Public Library of India effort has worked with numerous organisations, including the Indian Academy of Sciences, National Law School of India University, Roja Muthiah Library, Vishwakonkani Centre, Lalbagh Botanical Garden, RBANMS Schools, Ramakrishna Ashram, and many more. Carl is the author of 9 books and has posted millions of objects on the Internet for open access.
