A Puerto Rican educator shares her journey through cultural identity, education reform, and creating pathways for underserved students, proving that kindness and advocacy can transform lives and break systemic barriers.

About the speaker

Arielle Garcia Hayes is a wife, mother, and current school PrinciPAL at University High located on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Arielle has over ten years of administrative and leadership experience at local schools such as Center for Creative Arts, Normal Park Museum Magnet, Orchard Knob Middle, Dalewood Middle School, East Hamilton Middle and Central Office as School Choice Charter Coordinator.

Mrs. Hayes holds a B.S. and M.ED. from Tennessee Technological University and is a graduate of Chattanooga’s Public Education Foundation’s Principal Leadership Academy and PEF Leadership Fellow. Mrs. Hayes was chosen to be in the 40th class of the Chattanooga Area Chamber’s signature program: Leadership Chattanooga; as well as being featured in the July 2023 edition of Chatter Magazine’s Twenty under Forty.

Arielle’s community involvement has included, but not limited to, serving on the Board as Vice-Chair for Latina Professionals of Chattanooga, Vice-President of Programs for the East Brainerd Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce Council, and planning committee member for Habitat for Humanity’s Women’s Build Annual Fundraising Breakfast. She is a member of The Chattanooga Chapter of The Links, Incorporated and serves as Facet Chair for Services to Youth as well as several other chapter committees. Arielle also serves on Tennessee Tech’s Advisory Council for Education (ACEd) and received the TTU College of Education’s Alumna Award in 2022.

While Mrs. Hayes is not a native of Chattanooga, she is a proud Puertorriqueña from Cobb County, Georgia. Arielle is committed to the city and to serving all residents by providing access to and opportunity for an excellent public education and overall comfortable quality of life. She truly believes that the biggest change we can make as a community is to support all efforts and actions towards inclusivity and opportunities for all.
