Antonin’s talk explores the theme of “journey” in two ways: the journey of filmmaking and the universal narrative arc known as the hero’s journey.

Beyond the technical aspects, Antonin’s talk explores the theme of “journey” in two ways: the journey of filmmaking and the universal narrative arc known as the hero’s journey. He reflects on how storytelling structures, like those used in film, often parallel our experiences as individuals—moments of challenge, growth, and transformation that shape who we are.

About the speaker

Antonin Niclass is a Swiss and French animation director based in Lausanne and London.

In his work, Antonin brings stories to life through stop-motion animation, a craft that mirrors the journey every filmmaker undertakes—a series of small, deliberate steps that build toward a larger vision. His latest project, Coup de théâtre, a self-produced stop-motion ad for a theatre, offers a glimpse into this meticulous process. Completed in just two months and selected for the Annecy Festival, the project showcases the balance between technical innovation and creative storytelling.

From his early days as a camera assistant in Switzerland to winning a BAFTA for his short animation film Do Not Feed The Pigeons, Antonin’s own journey has been one of continuous evolution. Through the lens of his work, he invites audiences to consider how the journeys we take—both in art and in life—help us grow, connect, and create meaning.
