Sound for healing
A classically trained pianist, Anita began writing her own music while completing a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance with Theodore Lettvin at the University of Michigan.
Since then, Anita has recorded many CDs of original music including: All We Have is Now; Light; Creation Flight; Christmas Light; Lullabies From Home; If We Can Fly to the Moon; Dreaming Out to Sea; and, Songs from Within—The Magdalene Mystique.
In March 2006, Anita founded Purple Songs Can Fly, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a creative musical outlet for children at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers at Texas Children’s Hospital. Anita created the first recording studio ever created on a pediatric cancer floor where she and her songwriting staff work with the children and their siblings to write and record their own songs.
Purple Songs not only can fly, but do fly. The children’s songs are copied on purple CDs and flown by participating passengers, pilots and astronauts to places on earth and into space. To date, more than 1,400 songs have been written, recorded and flown around the globe and beyond. The songs have flown on two space shuttle missions, been heard on the in-flight playlists of both Continental and United Airlines, toured the world with The Rolling Stones, traveled on an undersea NOAA mission, and summited Mount Everest.
As the dreams, wishes, thoughts, feelings, and imaginations of these children take wing through the creativity of music, it is the vision of Purple Songs Can Fly that soaring, flying, and rising above the obstacles of illness can truly become a reality as each purple song that flies creates a tangible symbol for the hope of healing.
