About the speaker
Alea de Castro, BScN (RN), also known as Didi, is a multidisciplinary street dance artist, performer, curator, event producer, choreographer, educator, and registered nurse with over 23 years of dance experience, including around 14 years focused on Waacking, Hip Hop, and House. She has trained extensively with pioneering artists and foundational figures across New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, and Montreal. As co-founder and artistic director of Moov Ottawa Dance, a performing arts company committed to street dance education and cultural preservation, she co-choreographed and co-directed the 2021 dance work “The Underground” through the Ottawa Dance Directive. Alea’s work has been presented from the National Arts Centre in Ottawa to Indonesia’s International Dance Festival.
Alea has also helped produce and curate international events such as Soft Serve, the city’s yearly Waacking Battle, and Shake the Room, a Hip Hop and Breaking event held alongside her company. As a distinguished competitor, she has left her mark at various events like taking 1st place at Montreal’s Under Pressure Street Dance Festival and has been invited as a guest battler at WaackBazzar. Along side community engagement, she has also danced on commercial dance sets, blending artistry with professional industry experience. Aside from the arts, Alea received the 2021 Spark Ontario Health Care Hero Award for her role as a Registered Nurse.
Now a proud new mother, she is developing “Hey Ma!”, a project celebrating motherhood in street dance, while continuing to train, educate, perform, and grow both her community and personal practice.

Our theme for July is MENTOR.
It was chosen by our Glasgow chapter in Scotland and illustrated by Molly Hankinson, and is presented by our global partner Adobe.
No one is born with all the knowledge and skills they’ll need to thrive in life. So, ask for help. We all could use a guide as we climb. Find your mentors and be a mentor in return. Your plans for growth are more likely to succeed if they include lifting others up as you rise.
