I am Elenia Beretta, an Italian illustrator based in Berlin. I work for children’s books and magazines. I was born in Bergamo, a small town at the foot of the mountains in the North of Italy. I grew up exploring forests and painting with my mom, so I developed a passion for creativity. This passion for art and painting informed my decision to become an illustrator. After studying and working as a graphic designer for many years, I received my Master’s Degree in Editorial Illustration in Milan at MIMaster in 2014/2015. I've worked as a freelance illustrator since 2012.
My influences come from different fields such as movies, old photographs, art and literature. My favorite illustrators are Quentin Blake, Maurice Sendak, Alice and Martin Provensen, and Tomi Ungerer. I’m also very inspired by painters such as Matisse, René Magritte, Henri Rousseau and Picasso.
I work with Vogue Magazine, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Smith Journal, Papperlapapp Magazine, The Scoop Mag, Instagram, and Bloom Magazin. I've also illustrated food books and children’s books for Eli Readers, Rizzoli Editore, Einaudi Editore and was one of the illustrators for both books of Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls.
In October 2019, my first illustrated picture book, Minuit le chat du bois perdu by author Hélène Gaudy will be published.
In the end of 2019 I will be part of the collective show ‘Eccellenze Italiane’, dedicated to Gianni Rodari at the Italian Culture Institute in Portland, In October 2019 and at the Italian Culture Institute in San Francisco, in December 2019.
I’m also the Co-founder of Drawing Nights Berlin (@drawingnightsberlin). It is an open drawing event which provides an opportunity to diminish barriers between professionals and non-professionals. Through funny, creative exercises we share, learn, and create.
