With my work on pause, I'm reflecting on the experience of photographing Oleg Sentsov in January. This heroic man was abducted in May 2014 for demonstrating against the invasion of his country, reappearing in a foreign courthouse to be sentenced to twenty years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. In 2017 he went on a hunger strike that last 145 days. In September 2019, following a world outcry from renowned figures across the globe, Sentsov was released by way of a prisoner swap. To bear witness to this man whose great suffering was bettered by his love for his family and country was among the most humbling experiences of my career and life.
