Was bedeutet 'Ember' eigentlich? Glut, was vom Feuer übrigbleibt, Wärme, Transformation, Widerstandsfähigkeit...

Immer schneller, immer öfter, immer mehr, so ging es lange in der Mode. Doch wir alle wissen, so kann es nicht weiter gehen. Das grosse Feuer ist aus, jetzt glimmt die Glut und diese versuchen wir wieder auf kleiner Flamme zum Leuchten zu bringen. Mit hochwertigeren und langlebigen Produkten, mit Raum für Individualität, mit nachhaltigen Materialien, mit Upcycling, mit transparenteren und lokaleren Lieferketten...

Reiner lässt seine echten Muster für sich sprechen! Er wird sie zeigen, herumreichen und dazu wichtige Erkenntnisse vermitteln; sei dabei!

Unser Thema im März ist “LOCAL” (Veranstaltungssprache ist Englisch; Networking auf Deutsch/Englisch).

Local (pronounced lo·cal) in Portuguese means “being a resident or native to a particular area.”

Our Santos chapter had this to say about the significance of this month's theme:
“We are proud to be from Santos. The feeling of loving the city but sometimes moving away. The benefits of belonging somewhere.”

So, how does where you’re from define who you are? How do different spaces foster that sense of connection? How can we develop and strengthen bonds with the people around us?

It’s time to remind ourselves that community happens in neighborhoods not just on screens.

Our speaker this month is Kaustav Majumdar (KOU), an Indian-born, Germany-based contemporary artist and scenographer.

Working between realism and abstraction, KOU coined the term Neo Vividism to describe his exploration of color, memory, and light. His paintings transform fleeting moments into vibrant emotional landscapes where perception and time dissolve into sensation.

KOU regularly appears at creative and cultural events across Germany, including Venice Design Week and Wurzel Festival, and has created live drawing and digital art experiences in Berlin and Freiburg. You can view his beautifully vivid work on his instagram (@idea.kou) or website.

With spring a-bloom in Freiburg, we would love to have our audience come together to hear from KOU and then sip some coffee while we take in and sketch some of our beautiful surroundings. The plan is to meet at the Carl-Schurz-Haus - if the weather is decent, we will walk across the street to Columbi Park together for a 'sip & sketch'. If it is too cold or wet, we will cozy up in the library together.

Camino (pronounced Kah-Mee-Noh) is a Spanish word meaning “path” or “way.”

You don’t have to know exactly where your path leads, just trust that you’ll learn what you need along the way. Wherever you are headed, we wish you, as they say in Oviedo, “buen camino.” May you have a safe and meaningful journey.

Our speaker this month is tinkering nomad Ryan Jenkins, author of ‘The Tinkering Workshop’ and leader of Wonderful Idea Company.

Over the past twenty years, Ryan has been lucky enough to travel all around the world sharing playful and creative pathways to explore art, science and technology. This experience working with learners to construct personally meaningful projects has helped him build his understanding of the ways that impromptu learning environments can form around engaging topics and has demonstrated the value of flexible pop-up workshops and ateliers.

Through his travels to India, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Texas, Denmark, and more, his role as a “tinkering nomad” has reinforced his belief in direct hands-on learning experiences, confirmed the existence of creative communities and initiatives in unexpected places, and inspired hope in the possibilities for connections between different cultures. Let’s explore what it means to take your creative practice “on the road” and think together about how that process affects both you and the people you collaborate with along the way.

In our darkest hours, when everything seems to have dimmed, sometimes a light remains—not bright, not certain, but real. That is Koorsoo. A faint glimmer of hope that dares to survive.
Koorsoo is not about triumph or clarity; it is about the fragile yet unwavering light that keeps us going. A glance, a memory, a word. Small things that prevent collapse. It represents the quiet resilience of those who continue in spite of the weight, who believe without guarantee.
In a world that often normalizes despair, Koorsoo is a rebellion; soft, but profound. It reminds us, even the smallest spark matters.

Our theme for December is INNOVATION. Unser Thema im Dezember ist “INNOVATION” (Veranstaltungssprache ist Deutsch und Englisch, Vortrag wird auf Deutsch).

Innovation is risky and rebellious. It means breaking the routine and reimagining the familiar. It treats uncertainty as an invitation instead of a barrier. Innovation doesn’t take a genius, it just requires curiosity and willingness to try. And try again. 

Wie wird das Freiburg von morgen aussehen? Was bringt Freiburg weiter nach vorne? Was wird benötigt, damit auch die Stadt Freiburg mit ihren vielfältigen Aufgaben und Themen zukunftsfähig bleibt? Insbesondere für die Herausforderungen unserer Zeit gewappnet ist und selbst zum Motor des Wandels wird?

Denn nicht nur Freiburger, sondern generell Städte weltweit stehen vor immer komplexeren Herausforderungen wie Klimawandel, digitaler Wandel, bezahlbares Wohnen, Wohnraummangel, soziale Ungleichheit sowie nicht ausreichend zur Verfügung stehender Finanzen. Die Bewältigung all dessen erfordert neben großen Anstrengungen vor allem auch die Zusammenarbeit über Institutions-, Ämter- und Zuständigkeitsgrenzen hinweg. Dafür bedarf es innerhalb der Stadt moderner Strukturen und Arbeitsprozesse sowie dem Einsatz digitaler Lösungen bis hin zu KI.

Der Anspruch die Innovationskraft der Stadt Freiburg zu fördern und so die Lebensqualität der Bürgerinnen und Bürger zu erhalten und noch weiter zu verbessern, ist das Ziel der Arbeit der über 4.400 Mitarbeitenden der Stadt Freiburg und weiteren rund 3.000 Mitarbeitenden der städtischen Gesellschaften FWTM, FSB und der VAG.

Creativity demands growth. Not the kind that can be measured with a ruler. It’s about taking stock of your character. Who’s ready to chase wild possibilities and meaningful progress? We must unlearn the need to be perfect and busy. Remember how to play and get our hands dirty again.

Die großen Fragen machen vor kleinen Betrieben keinen Halt. Gibt es ewiges Wachstum auf einem endlichen Planeten, mit sichtbar begrenzten Ressourcen?

Unser Speaker ist Johannes Dilger, Inhaber von Förster Max: der kleinen Patisserie, Eisdiele & Chocolaterie in der Dreikönigstraße mit der Hausnummer 46 und der Zasiusstraße 70 - inmitten des idyllischen Stadttteils Wiehre. Sie wachsen, stehen still, halten inne, wachsen und leben in jeden Tag hinein, als sei der bevorstehende Tag der Wichtigste, den es heute eben gibt.

Denn sie haben ein Ziel: Glückliche Gäste, leuchtende Augen, wundervolle Begegnungen zwischen Menschen, die sie mit Köstlichkeiten aus der Patisserie gebührend begleiten wollen. Was dabei passiert? Wachstum.

Nein, nicht im Sinne der typischen Mengensteigerung, der Optimierung eines Forcasts, wie man neuerdings zu sagen pflegt. Vielmehr verstehen sie Wachstum als eine Steigerung der Qualität, dem Befriedigen des Bedürfnisses nach wunderbaren Genussmomenten. Und damit wächst ihr kleines Süßigkeitenparadies, wie auch sie als Menschen.

The world feels hard in so many ways. Soft is gentle, empathic, and vulnerable. But being soft is not a weakness. It is a sign of deeper strength. Having the courage to walk through life without armor… Soft can be our salvation.

Unser Speaker ist der Hamburger Künstler Jan Kamensky: visueller Utopist und digitaler Gärtner. Seit 2020 gestaltet er utopische Filme, in denen er die Verwandlung von autodominierten Straßen in lebenswerte Orte aufzeigt. Seine Animationen erreichen weltweit Menschen – von Berlin über Mexiko-City bis Jakarta. Sie sind unter anderem in Kooperation mit Greenpeace International und anderen NGOs entstanden. Seine utopischen Filme werden außerdem in namenhaften Museen und Ausstellungen präsentiert.

Unser Speaker ist Marcus Hantel.
Als passionierter Hobby-Gärtner weiß Marcus Hantel, was es braucht um seinen Garten zum Blühen zu bringen: einen guten Boden, genug Wasser und Sonne, sorgfältige Hege und Pflege, Bienen, Regenwürmer und andere Helfer aus der Natur… und immer auch etwas Glück.

Nach ganz ähnlichen Prinzipien führt er seinen Bioladen: ohne gute Mitarbeiter, engagierte Erzeuger und persönliche Kundenpflege keine Blüte, sprich kein Wachstum und kein Fortbestand. Denn was erblüht, verblüht und blüht wieder auf - immer wieder auf Neue und doch immer wieder anders. Wir freuen uns sehr zu diesem spannenden Monatsthema ein paar kreative Gedanken und Anregungen zu liefern.

Seit 2007 führt Marcus mit seinem Team den Marktladen-Rieselfeld in Freiburg. Der zentral im Stadtteil gelegene Bioladen ist Einkaufsort und Treffpunkt in einem. Frisches Bio-Obst und -Gemüse, vorzugsweise von Bio-Erzeugern aus der Region sind besonders beliebt. Auch beim Großhändler setzt der Bio-Vollsortimenter auf Regionalität.

Being a mentor is considered a way of giving back. But mentors get just as much out of the relationship, if not more. Beyond the satisfaction of helping, mentors also learn from their mentees. From a fresh way of looking at established practices to tackling new problems with a beginner’s mind. 

Mentor – More Than Just an Advisor?
According to our speaker Janina Brudy-Weißenborn, mentoring can be the spark that ignites ideas, opens doors and transforms doubt into courage and sometimes gives us a nudge in the right direction.
A great mentor sees not only who we are, but also who we could become. Has there been someone in your life who played this role and how did they influence you? Mentoring is never a one-way street – it can also change your self-image and the way you see others. Let’s come together and talk about the value of mentors—and how each of us might become a mentor ourselves. 

Unsere Speakerin ist Janina Brudy-Weißenborn. She is an entrepreneur, trainer, people and business consultant, mentor and mentee. With over ten years of experience in the fields of Learning & Development and Change Management, she is passionate about fostering personal and organizational growth. Janina has a track record in designing mentoring programs, both as a professional and as someone who values the power of mentorship in her own journey.

As Community Lead of the Baden-Württemberg Mentor Me Community, Janina actively supports the development of mentoring networks and empowers others to connect, learn, and grow together.
