Thriving Through Change: AI Anxieties
âAI is shaping the world in profound ways, but especially for the creative community I think there is a lot of uncertainty about how we’re thinking about it and how we’re using it. So, what we’re doing here is part of a larger collective conversation about the possibilities, the challenges, and the roles we want AI to play in our life.â
The Charlottesville chapter of CreativeMornings meet to collectively deal with their anxieties about AI. They kicked off with a product designer sharing how her team is implementing AI. Then everyone created zines to express and share their thoughts and feelings about AI.
The event was part of our special event series called âThriving Through Changeâ designed to foster meaningful discussions about the challenges that creative professionals are facing today.
Thanks to our Global Partner Adobe, some of our most engaged CreativeMornings chapters around the world are designing interactive event formats that unleash the collective wisdom of our community.
âA zine gives anybody the authority to say anything without anyone being able to tell them not to.â
Participants got hands on with markers and stickers to fill out a zine template full of prompts like, âwhat are three things that intrigue you about AI?â and âwhat would an AI dystopia look like?â
The event kicked off with Karolina Whitmore, a product designer, sharing how her team is using AI to help design and build mobile apps and websites. She discussed the transformative power of AI to bridge communication gaps, improve design outcomes, and enhance empathy in the design and development process.
 Bridging Communication Gaps
Traditionally, product development involved distinct rolesâdesigners, engineers, and strategistsâeach speaking their own language. This often led to misunderstandings and inefficiencies. Karolina highlighted that AI serves as a bridge, enabling these different disciplines to communicate more effectively. By using natural language processing, designers can now articulate their ideas directly to the codebase, facilitating real-time collaboration with engineers. This shift not only speeds up the development process but also fosters a deeper understanding of each other’s roles and challenges.
âWhat’s nice is that we’re not working in silos anymore. We’re actually working closer together. Oddly enough despite having AI in the room with us, we’re sitting side by side because we have a bridge to speak the same language.â
 Enhancing Empathy in Design
Karolina emphasized that the integration of AI has made designers more empathetic. By being involved in the coding process, designers gain insights into the technical constraints and possibilities, allowing them to create more user-centered designs. This empathy extends to understanding the engineering perspective, as designers can now consider how their choices impact performance and accessibility from the outset. This proactive approach leads to smarter, more efficient products that better meet user needs.
The Human Element in AI Integration
Despite the benefits of AI, there are still anxieties surrounding its use in creative fields. Karolina acknowledged that while AI can streamline processes, it is not a replacement for human creativity and intuition. Engineers still play a crucial role in reviewing AI-generated code, ensuring that the final product meets quality standards. This human oversight is essential for maintaining trust in the technology.
