“I have strength. I have roots.”

Catharine Moreira is a deaf poet and part of Slam do Corpo, a poetry battle that features a deaf poet and a hearing poet creating a wonderful encounter between languages. In this performance for our São Paulo chapter, we experience a poem about hunger and feminine power.)

Here is a translation of the poem:

And then, and then, the hunger, desire, hunger. I’m hungry. I’m hungry, desire. I’m hungry, I’m hungry. Hungry with great hunger. It disappears to devour.

It devoured my birth and devoured my childhood and took my family away. I lost my first love. And I wish to devour and it devoured my dreams, my ideas, and it devoured my future. Where is my future? It devoured my future. I have nothing and then and it devoured my pride.

And where is the pride of the deaf? And it devoured my story. My story. My long story was devoured. It doesn’t exist yet. It’s nothing grandpa. My future. Without a future everything is over; there’s no relationship. I don’t have a job. Where is my relationship? Help the deaf to get a job. Help! And I have nothing. The sounds of the signs. I lost my identity. Hi, hi. My name? Where am I? I have many names and I’m nobody, nothing.

And then, it devoured with the biggest mouth. it devoured my poetry. No, it didn’t devour, it cursed, shouted, insulted, and it was swallowing me. Swallowing, swallowing, swallowing of nothing. And then, I have strength. I have roots. I have roots. I’m strong. The deaf poetry movement is strong, even in silence, even in silence. And I devoured this world and then, and then, and then, and then.

And then, the flies and first before anything else and I go up to an exquisite soup and to an instant soup. And then the conversations around me. Hi. And I drink this soup and the conversations continue, continue, continue and I just drink soup in silence. And then I take a shower, I clean myself, and scrub myself. Hi. And my imagination flows like a simple f-ck and nothing. Silence.

And then, and then, Hi to the news, other movies, movement, and sound , action, noise. Hello. All this exists on our TV, and at dinner with friends, and I go deaf. I am deaf. The drawing of flowers. And we have no time, and then, and brought me a wine but I didn’t have time. I wanted to have planted flowers. Yeah. but I didn’t have time. And where was I to bring it myself? I couldn’t.

Time and the bones break. And the bones break. The cost to the muscles of the… huh, have you watched? And if you contract, if you fix my hair. The flies, they, they haunt my life. The flies continue in my life and they haunt me and then there are many flies and the TV remote has no battery. Where is the battery? Where is the battery? Hello. Everything fails. Hi. And my energy fails too.

The reds and then the red of blood. What did not come to be abandoned. And then I am with you. It is difficult to stop the blood. It is the blood that runs through my innocent body and without knowing anything. And then, hello I am deaf. Hi hottie.

I am a hot deaf girl. You are an actress, but you are deaf like an actress, only an engineer. But I am deaf and then the poet. But I am deaf. I have big delicious breasts and I am. I do not envy motherhood. There is one I do not envy obese women, no. And it produces milk. They do not envy that. And my period runs, but I do not envy that.

And the longevity of life does not envy that. I want to have multiple orgasms. In several, and then, and then, hi. Free. It is because you are looking at me. They are looking at me and labels arrive. Label all this in a thousand. I call myself by many names. Always deaf, deaf, deaf, and then hi. Hi. Is deaf and tomorrow I am not a reference for these sexist men society. And is born deaf in the world of speaking people. Is born deaf and in the world where hands speak and where she expresses herself. And then.
