DJ Jim Q's Playlist: JOURNEY

Happy New Year, listeners! Welcome to the first playlist of 2025. Brought to us by the Muscat Chapter, this month’s theme is Journey—and oh, what an auditory adventure I have planned for us. Buckle up and settle in; we have miles to travel through the sonic scenery. Get in the van, and let’s roll. I think you will enjoy the ride.

This month’s theme got me thinking about the odyssey of artistic creation. It seems trite to say, but it’s nonetheless true: it’s not the destination but the journey that matters most—at least for the traveler. For those travelers who are also artists, this may be particularly salient guidance, as perpetual discontent is often the driving force behind those souls inspired to create. In this sense, the destination is ultimately unreachable. It sounds almost tragic, like unrequited love, but the trick is to find fulfillment in the pursuit. Advice that is easier to give than to take, as is most good advice.

Prioritizing the journey is not just wise for artists; truly anyone can benefit from investing their expectations in the satisfaction of the process rather than banking everything on the outcome. I’ve found this to be true in many areas, especially in regard to creative endeavors where I may not be particularly skilled. Music creation, for instance, is something I truly love; however, it doesn’t come effortlessly to me. If I were entirely preoccupied with the quality of the finished product, I’d likely be constantly disappointed and discouraged. Instead, I thrive on the small achievements, the meditative focus, and the joy of discovery. Put another way, the experience of making something is the real payoff; what is made is simply a byproduct. The journey is the real treasure.

Join me on this sonic quest as we cruise through genres and decades on a wandering auditory excursion. The theme this month is Journey, and I’ve mapped out an itinerary filled with fantastic musical destinations. From the Madchester revival sounds of Dummy’s Nullspace to The Doors’ spooky journey of mortality in ā€œThe End of The Noght,ā€ and Alice Coltrane’s instrumental spiritual pilgrimage Journey in Satchidananda, these songs of adventure and sojourn will satisfy your wanderlust—or maybe just inspire your next expedition.

Thanks for listening. If you like these playlists please let me know, I would love to hear from you on Twitter . Also be sure to like and follow on Spotify. See you next month with another themed playlist.
