DJ Jim Q's Playlist: Change

Growth, accomplishment and progress are all predicated by change. Conversely, failure, deterioration and regression are also changes. I like the ambivalence of change, it’s neither good or bad, it is just an unstoppable force sweeping through. Heraclitus tells us “There is nothing permanent except change.“ Ghandi has a bit more empowering perspective and tells us "If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change.” This has since been translated into the catchy slogan “be the change that you wish to see in the world” which is often attributed to him but wasn’t actually spoken by him. The bottom line is those who embrace and adapt to the ever-changing world around them will thrive. New designers often ask me what they should learn, and I always tell them learn how to learn, self educate and keep learning. Everything changes around you, stay curious and engaged. We all need to be constantly growing, adapting and progressing. I try to embrace change, but I admit, sometimes I struggle. I’m a creature of habit, I have had a blueberry muffin from the same shop every morning for the past 3 years, so I often have to self initiate the change in order to disrupt my patterns. I know that by being set in my ways, I am just swimming against the current. Ch-ch-ch-ch changes, turn and face the strange.

This month’s collection of songs is all about transition, evolution, transformation, and devolution; it’s about change. As I look through the list, I realize there is quite a diverse set of tracks from Minor Threat to Fleetwood Mac. OK, I can feel the eye rolls, say what you want about Landslide, but it’s a great song and Stevie Nick’s voice is pure gold. Go ahead, try to change my mind, it’s futile.

Thanks for listening. If you like these playlists, please share them and give me a holler on Twitter @jiquin. See you next month.
