DJ Jim Q's Playlist: BLOSSOM

Greetings, listeners! Welcome to this month’s playlist. Our theme is BLOSSOM, brought to us by the Pereira chapter of CreativeMornings.

Blossom is most certainly fertile ground to cultivate. In a literal sense, the word describes the peak display of a flowering plant, but it’s also a rich metaphor for growth and positive transition. One metaphorical use that resonates with me is the phrase I’m sure you have heard, “late bloomer.” It refers to someone who matures or succeeds later in life. I’d probably count myself among those late-to-grow individuals.

I’ve also noticed an anecdotal connection between creativity and these so-called late bloomers. Many of my artistic friends have admitted they too were labeled late bloomers in their youth. I don’t have hard evidence, but I wonder if this delayed development somehow preserves childhood creativity and wonder into adulthood. It’s also possible that late bloomers just had more time for artistic hobbies than peers who were deeply immersed in traditional youth activities like dances and sports.

Of course, this is simply a half-baked hypothesis, but it does track with my own experience. How about you? Do you consider yourself a late bloomer? And if so, do you think it contributed to your artistic endeavors?

From Dr. Octagon’s “Blue Flowers” to Kali Uchis’ “After the Storm,” this playlist examines themes of growth and flourishing. Billie Eilish sings of rebirth after heartbreak in the brooding dirge “Six Feet Under.” Emmylou Harris offers an uptempo, sweet serenade about blossoming springtime love in “Roses in the Snow.” Nick Drake reflects on change and transition in his stripped-down B-side “Blossom.” Florist takes us on a road trip to the places that fuel her growth in “Glowing Brightly.”

These are just a few of the 30-plus songs in this month’s playlist—did I miss any?

Let your ears open to the flourishing sounds of this collection. The theme is blossom, and with these tracks I hope to arrange a bouquet of auditory delights for your enjoyment. From Nirvana to Wet Leg to Wolf Alice, these sonic blossoms unfold to reveal their musical beauty.

Thanks for listening! If you enjoy these playlists, please let me know—I’d love to hear from you. Give me a shout on Bluesky and be sure to follow me on Spotify. See you next month with another arrangement.
